As I already told you all this morning, I’m struggling a bit with end-of-school stressy things. So right now, these songs are what I’m listening to.
It’s an odd list, I know, and an odd name–“my worship music”. But there is a reason for all of it.
This list is my worship music because it plays a similar role for me now to what worship music was to me when I was religious. It grounds me, gives me something to hold on to. It makes me feel good. It gives me hope. It reminds me that life is a beautiful thing, worth pushing through the bad shit for.
It’s a way I use ritual to make my life better.
Some of the songs are there literally just because they are fun to sing (We Are Young, and others have special meaning to me because of people in my life I share them with, and some have such perfect lyrics I know them by heart, and can recite them like a prayer, like poetry. Florence and the Machine is on the list because that music just FEELS like worship music to me.
Never Quite Free
It’s all good to learn that from right here the view goes on forever
And you’ll never want for comfort and you’ll never be alone
See the sunset turning red let all be quiet in your head
And look about, all the stars are coming out
I could go on with the quoting, but I already feel liked enough of a 16-year-old sharing my playlist as a blogpost.
Anyhow, do any of you use specific songs/albums/etc like this? Share songs/poems/etc that give you strength in the comments. I’d love to hear your stories.
